Family constellations are an experience phenomenological method of work with people getting to the core of the matter. It is a method enabling self-knowledge and deeper understanding of the reality. It allows us to have a look at our difficulties by viewing the whole, not us as individuals. It enables us to free ourselves from burdens of the past, helps solve problems of interpersonal relations, personal, health and work-related problems. It is very difficult to write about family constellations. It is nearly impossible to intermediate through words such experience having so many layers and concerning the person at such a deep level. The best way how to get to know family constellations is to participate in them and experience their effect personally.
Constellations are not individual works. Not even in such a respect that the attention would be focused only on the client, only on his story. The client is perceived in constellations as an integral part of a larger story, a larger system – family constellations are system work. Nobody of us is only an island and we do not determine our lives largely by our will, on the contrary, we are largely determined by the fact from where we come – mostly by our family. From here it is already near to the idea that it is impossible to search for happiness for ourselves only, that it is necessary to search for the balance of the whole. Work in family constellations is based just on the fact that we are all connected with our predecessors and their fates. This connection is stronger than we are commonly able to realize. The fact that we are all a part of our family systems connects us deeply with everything what has ever happened in the previous generations. We obtain our power just from our roots. When working with family constellations, we can connect with this power again, feel a part of the whole, and thus become strong and at the same time free. Therefore, family constellations concern the arrangement of our relations with family members and their fates. A lot of emotions also are released in constellations, but these are not the objective, constellations are not a cathartic technique, the objective is a picture – that original, violated, and then new, harmonic picture, in which the energy blocked so far starts flowing immediately through the whole system. With constellations we can immediately experience that deep ties exist, although we stop believing in them. And that they are very strong, so much that we cannot order them. Despite of that - or maybe just for that reason - we try to circumvent them, avoid painful experience. It is possible on the surface, but not inside. The soul knows who has brought it to the world, who is the father and mother, it knows whom it loves, either it is acceptable or not, it knows whom it does not love, though it should perhaps love, it knows about deep sadness, even if the person laughs. And if an individual does not experience anything from that himself, somebody else – closed one – must be found who takes on himself that inexperienced fate, pain or love, having no idea about that. And constellations are able to show this and, just only with this revealing how things are, also to cure it. It is not necessary to change, process, solve anything in constellations, it is only enough to leave a space for what exists. It is a therapeutic view of the reality. Family constellations are looking at – things are like this, and even if they are no matter how difficult, I say to them “yes“. “The order of love“ running through the whole work with family constellations is its basis. At the moment when things are put in an order, we can feel relief and peace.
The position of family constellation looks very easy, but within that small space and time extremely many things are happening at many levels. The constellation means taking a look at how things are. And by seeing imbalance we have a chance to remedy it, to find harmony, a natural order, in which love can flow freely. It is the order in which: „Everybody has been given a place he is entitled to. The respect is shown to everybody appertaining to him. Everybody takes his responsibility for his part of relations and leaves the responsibility of the others to whom it belongs. Everybody carries his fate himself as it is, with all good and bad things – neither he takes over the fate of anybody else nor imposes his fate on the others. The order where children are children and parents are parents, where children do not have to be early mature and parents do not rely on them, where children can take and parents give and where children take their parents as they are. Where forgotten members take their places in the family and are accepted back into the hearts of the others. Where a wife is a woman for her husband and a husband is a man for his wife. Where there is the balance in relations between taking and accepting. And finally – where love and pain are accepted as they are.“
In the constellations, it is necessary to live through everything fully with open eyes. Otherwise, any things not live through return or are transferred to the others whom we force hereby to live what we refuse ourselves. The more a person is able to live through one side, the more he can also live through the other. Love and pain are two sides of the same coin – what sense any separation would have without meeting! And constellations are such a place of unbelievable meetings we did not even hope in, meetings in the world divided by pain accumulated for a long time.
Family constellations are neither returning into the past nor any efforts to change what cannot be changed any more. It is finding our own strength we have if we are in contact with our roots, with from where we are coming. We are searching for the way to our real, deep and true feelings – to pain and love. These are basic polarities, in which life flows from the distant past through our ascendants to us and through us further to our children. These primary feelings, primary forces are enormously strong, they are stronger than us, we do not have them under control and only when we are near to them we are powerless and vulnerable. However, if we do not give up to this larger force, if we are running away, closing ourselves, blaming ourselves, trying to be stronger, then we lose contact with this force and over time we find ourselves outside the flow of life, outside the flow of our own life strength, outside the others. We search for this strength in the constellations. Work with family constellations is the possibility how to start living in a more fully and quality way.
At present, family constellations are used very widely. At first sight, they seem to be very easy and their bad quality is difficult to prove. In order to guide and participate in them, however, one has to have great respect and humility as well as deep knowledge of what Bert Hellinger calls the order of love. Therefore, be careful when selecting your lecturer and trust your feelings.
